Your Dream Covers?

New postby Scott » Wed Dec 22, 2010 8:32 am

Cripple Creek
The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down
Evangeline

And one I've mentioned for years: Tuesday Afternoon (Moody Blues).

Listen carefully to it some time -- a Buddha > Tuesday Afternoon > Buddha sandwich would rock.

Around 1'25", you can hear where the Buddha segue would begin....

 fabulous !

I would love to hear them cover Mr. Green Genes, I've seen the Shockenaw Mnt Boys do it so it's not like they would have a problem playing the tune. Hell I would take any Zappa covers. The problem is the masses want to hear BIAH, Buddha, Head, Warhead, etc ...

I was actually thinking about putting something from HOT RATS down - but then I thought about Jimmy Carl Black in 200 motels and had to put Lonesome Cowboy Burt - it would be hilarious to see someone do that justice - it gets kinda funky in the middle there too! Peaches, Mr. Green Genes or The Gumbo Variations (since it has a thick fiddle jam in it) would be great as well. It would be really neat to see a competent group of musicians re-work some Zappa for a "souped up string band".

I would also love to see them try a nice old floyd song - maybe ECHOES or one of these days. I love that "Live in Pompeii" era floyd stuff - they were harnessing raw universal energy then!

And Part 2:

- love this comment about part 2 on youtube - "3:17 to 3:46 is the song i imagine playing in the background as you die and ascend into heaven and into a higher level of consciousness...its that awsome"

There are times -- seriously -- I feel that Railroad is an acoustic Pink Floyd. Definitely early, too.

Although the 9.6.09 show in Aspen had Jeff Miller sit in on Hunting Song > Mountain Time, and man, there's some Wall-era Floyd there.

As an old Deadhead, there are many Dead tunes I would like to see/hear Railroad Earth perform. I have even been accused of wanting RRE to become a Dead cover band. One DSO is quite enough. Just listen to the "Railroad Jerry" compilation that circulates and you will see that RRE does not cover, they interpret. Other bands I would like to hear RRE put their stamp on...The Band, NRPS, Seals and Crofts. There are a couple of John Denver tunes I think they could "own". And how about some early Bob Dylan.

Truth be told, original RRE tunes are the meat and potatoes. The covers, performed and hoped for, are just the gravy.

I love that last line you wrote. It is definitely the TRUTH!!! Original RRE is what keeps me going and keeps me wanting. Covers are just a nice surprise!!!!

Would love to see them interpret a Led Zeppelin song and make it their own.

I'd also love to hear some Tull, which Skehan would be all over. I know he would love to play The Witch's Promise.

Let it Rock! (chuck berry?) Just listened to JGB (6/12/82) and was like OMG, this is a natural for RRE, have they ever done it? (Hint hint) Got my Breadbox on NYE BTW and it was off the hook completely -- JGB post-Jerry still rocks, got Stu'd!

Am I the only one who wish they would do some Flatt & Scruggs, or maybe something like "Everytime" by the Grascal or "Don’t Come Out of the Hole" by Blue Highway or something like that. Just some straight up, kiss-ass bluegrass?

They seem to slowly be moving away from 'grass.

I don't remember the last time they played Fire on the Mountain, for instance.

I'd love John Barleycorn.

Mentioned to Skehan that they should play 5:15 by the Who. I think it's an outside-of-the-box fit.

This is an interesting thread that (if there were enough people milling around here) could go on indefinitely...

I'm at work (streaming Pandora) & the song "Family Tradition" by Hank Williams Jr. started playing, & I immediately thought to myself "This would be a fun song for RRE to cover, one that I bet would get the crowd whoopin' and a hollerin'!"

It's by no means my idea of a "dream cover" but if they changed up a few words & musically changed it up (more bluegrass, more "jammy", more rockin' or whatever) I bet the boys could do a killer RRE take on this song:

Country music singers
have always been a real close family
but lately some of my kin folks
have disowned a few others and me
i guess its because
i kinda changed my direction
i guess i went and broke the family tradition

they get on me wanna know Hank
why do you drink?
(Hank) why do you roll smoke?
Why must you live out the songs that you wrote?
over and over
everybody made my prediction
so if i get stoned
I'm just carryin'
on an old family tradition

I am very proud
of my daddys name
although his kinda music
and mine ain't exactly the same
stop and think it over
put yourself in my position
if i get stoned and sing all night long
it's a family tradition

Don't ask me Hank
why do you drink?
(Hank) why do you roll smoke?
Why must you live out the songs that you wrote?
If I'm down in a Honky-Tonk
Some ol' slicks tryin to give me corrections
I'll say leave me alone
I'm singin all night long
it's a family tradition

Lordy, I have loved some ladies
and I have loved Jim Beam
and they both tried to kill me
in 1973
when that doctor asked me
Son how did you get in this condition
I said hey sawbones I'm just carryin on
an old family tradition

So don't ask me Hank
why do you drink?
(Hank) why do you roll smoke?
Why must you live out the songs you wrote?
Stop and think it over
Try and put yourself in my unique position
If I get stoned and sing all night long
It's a family tradition!

I'm guessing a lot of the people in the crowd wouldn't be familiar with the song, & either way I bet it would be fun for the band & fans alike.

Here's the original album version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHjaW9sXl7s

and a live version from the old Merv Griffin show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afl7mlVkcuM
